TRIPODS

A Tripod is Essential for a telescope and useful if you have a camera.
For telescopes, a tripod provides stability and ease of use.
A smooth panning head makes looking for birds easier.
Before buying, try one out with your own scope.
Balance, weight and smoothness all add to a steadier image.
A good tripod should be not too heavy and not too light.
Carbon fibre legs are lightweight but come at a price.
Dark and dull coloured is better than bright and shiny.
Some of the best tripod systems offer a range of  heads – quick and easy or smooth.

Check before buying:
Is it sturdy with a good spread?
Is it quick and easy to set up and put away?
Does it have a quick release plate included?
Are its knobs or clips easy to use?
Does it have a securing pin in the mounting plate to stop your scope spinning free?
Are replaceable parts easily available?

Top tripod and head companies include
Manfrotto, Benbow Velbon and Slik.

The new Manfrotto 701 video and scope head (left) is amazingly smooth for the price. Best advice is to try before you buy. Take your scope and or camera along to your nearest shop or field day event.
