Down on the pond the young moorhen are growing fast and are now almost as big as their parents. Now that summer has finally arrived the dragonflies are still very active. The first hatch of young swallows are skimming the surface and the call of a young buzzard echoes from the hills. Meadow flowers are in full bloom and bumble bees are busy collecting nectar.
This year we are also taking part in a major RSPB survey to discover what makes farms like ours so special in terms of their wildlife. Collecting information on the variety and numbers of wild plants and animals will help ensure the future of all farm wildlifenot just rare birds like the Cirl Bunting. The latest survey is on bats, so more information will appear soon.
Two kestrel chicks successfully fledged this weekend. They are currently sitting under the barn roof, making the occasional foray out and about before returning to the shade.
Wildlife photography keeps me busy year round but summer is definitely the
best and most pleasant time to enjoy the great outdoors.
