WHAT MAGNIFICATION?

Higher magnification drawbacks:

  1. difficulty in holding your binoculars steady.
  2. reduction of field of view.
  3. loss of image brightness.

Use higher magnification in hides
or for viewing at estuaries and reservoirs.

Lower magnification advantages:

  1. closer focusing ability.
  2. greater field of view, so improving use.
  3. greater depth of field.
Lower magnifications (7x or 8x) are especially recommended if you are also using a telescope. For everyday use, lower magnification binoculars are best as they usually give a brighter image with more depth of field. If you do not intend to use a telescope, then higher powered 10x binoculars are a good compromise.
