Lawns
A sunny, open and well kept lawn is essential for a successful bird garden.
Grass provides a hunting ground for many birds, a place where Green woodpeckers
can search for ants and Blackbirds forage for worms.
A lawn rich in worms may take a bit more work as you must clear their casts before mowing, but worms are vital for good soil structure.
They form an unseen army aerating, draining and enriching the ground beneath our feet. Do not be too quick to clear up leaves in Autumn, especially willow and cherry. Left overnight your hidden army will consume many of the leaves, which will help to fertilise your soil for free.
The best bird gardens have plenty of variety
- changes of level, little cliffs, hills, valleys and stone walls.
An over neat and tidy garden is not very good for birds, so now you
have the perfect excuse! Berry bearing trees and shrubs are also important
to supplement your daily delivery of nuts and seeds to the birdtable.
